WORKING its magic on the box office, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince emerged as the worldwide winner of the summer movie season.
The latest film in the series based on JK Rowling’s books about the young wizard conjured up $893million from 59 countries.
In North America, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen was the top draw; elsewhere, Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs ruled the overseas box office.
Figures released by industry analysts at Rentrak Corporation show the total earned this summer (May 1 to September 7 was the timeframe used) was $10billion, up nearly 6 per cent on last year’s $9.485billion for the same period, despite the economic downturn. North American ticket sales were up by 2.5 per cent.
Terminator Salvation, Angels & Demons and Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs all found a stronger audience outside North America. Angels & Demons was released in 72 countries, the most territories for any release in the international top 10.
Star Trek, The Hangover, Up and The Proposal all found a much bigger audience within North America than overseas; X-Men Origins: Wolverine and G.I. Joe had slightly higher box office in North America than elsewhere.
